Orthopedic and Aesthetic Surgery of the Lower Limbs

Aesthetic surgery of the lower limbs encompasses a wide range of procedures aimed at improving the appearance and functionality of the legs. These surgeries can include both deformity correction and limb lengthening. Orthopedics, in turn, studies and treats diseases of the musculoskeletal system, helping people regain health and improve their quality of life. In this article, we will explore various aspects of orthopedic and aesthetic surgery of the lower limbs, including the Ilizarov method, procedures, their features, advantages, and risks.

Orthopedic surgeons use both conservative and surgical methods to help patients regain mobility and reduce pain. Aesthetic surgery, on the other hand, aims to improve the appearance of the body. In the context of the lower limbs, it includes procedures that help eliminate defects and deformities while enhancing physical proportions and appearance. Aesthetic surgery of the lower limbs includes several key procedures that help patients achieve their desired results.

What to expect

Types of Procedures

Correction of Leg Shape

Correction of Leg Shape

Leg shape correction is a surgical procedure aimed at eliminating limb deformities such as “O”-shaped (valgus) and “X”-shaped (varus) curvature. These conditions can be either congenital or arise as a result of injuries, poor posture, or joint diseases.

Correction of “O”-Shaped Curvature

The correction of “O”-shaped curvature is typically performed through osteotomy. This surgical operation involves making an incision in the bone, allowing its position to be changed. During the surgery, the bones are aligned and fixed in the correct position. To maintain the proper leg alignment during healing, an Ilizarov apparatus may be installed. This external fixator provides stability and allows the bones to heal in the correct anatomical position. The rehabilitation process includes physical therapy and gradual restoration of limb function.

Correction of “X”-Shaped Curvature

The correction of “X”-shaped curvature also requires osteotomy. The surgeon removes a portion of the bone or makes changes to its structure to align the legs and restore their normal shape. After correction, a special fixation device is used, which helps prevent recurrent deformities and ensures proper healing. An important part of the rehabilitation process is monitoring the recovery dynamics and gradually returning to physical activity.

Both procedures require a comprehensive approach and careful planning, including preoperative assessment of the patient’s condition and postoperative monitoring to achieve optimal results.

Limb Lengthening

Limb lengthening is one of the most sought-after procedures in aesthetic surgery, especially among individuals suffering from short stature or those wishing to increase their height. Limb lengthening procedures can vary and depend on the individual needs of the patient.

Lengthening of the Shinbones

Lengthening of the shinbones allows for an increase in their length by 6-7 cm. The operation begins with osteotomy, during which the surgeon makes an incision in the bone to prepare it for lengthening. After this, an external fixator is installed. The external fixator gradually stretches the bone by 1 mm per day, promoting the formation of new bone tissue. This method requires patience, as the process can take several months. It is also essential to follow the doctor’s recommendations to ensure successful healing and recovery.

Cross-Lengthening of Thighs and Shins

Cross-lengthening of the thighs and shins is a more complex procedure that allows for an overall height increase of 12-16 cm. This surgery combines the lengthening of both the thighs and the shins, requiring a high level of surgical skill and careful medical supervision. Due to the complexity of the procedure, the patient must be under the attentive monitoring of specialists throughout the entire process, including preoperative preparation, the surgery itself, and rehabilitation. It is important to consider all risks and potential complications.

LON Method (Lengthening Over Nail)

The LON method combines the use of an external fixator with an internal nail. This method allows for faster healing and reduces recovery time compared to traditional methods. Thanks to the internal nail, which is inserted into the bone, patients can achieve greater stability and experience fewer restrictions on movement during the lengthening process. This method is often chosen by active patients who want to return to their daily lives as quickly as possible.

LATN Method (Lengthening and then Nailing)

The LATN method starts with lengthening the limbs using an external fixator, after which an internal nail is installed for stabilization and support of the bone. This approach improves outcomes and provides additional support during healing. As with the LON method, it is important to monitor the patient’s condition throughout the rehabilitation period to avoid possible complications and ensure successful recovery.

Limb lengthening is a serious medical procedure that requires careful preparation, highly qualified specialists, and attentive postoperative monitoring to achieve the best results and minimize risks.

Correction of Aesthetic Problems of the Feet

Foot correction includes surgical procedures aimed at eliminating aesthetic defects and functional disorders.

Hallux Valgus: This condition is characterized by the deviation of the big toe outward. Surgical correction not only improves appearance but also alleviates pain associated with this condition.

Atresia of the Fourth Toe: This rare anomaly, in which the fourth toe of the foot is absent, can also be corrected using surgical methods.

Ilizarov Method

Ilizarov Method

The Ilizarov method is a unique technique developed by Russian physician Gavril Ilizarov, which is used for limb lengthening and correction of deformities. This method has become revolutionary in the field of orthopedic surgery and has gained widespread recognition worldwide.

Key Aspects of the Ilizarov Method:
  • Structure of the Apparatus: The Ilizarov apparatus consists of metal rings, rods, and special fasteners that are attached to the bone through small holes. This system provides the necessary fixation and support, allowing for the control of the lengthening process.
  • Distraction Process: After osteotomy (cutting the bone), distraction begins, where the apparatus gradually increases the distance between the bone segments by 1 mm per day. This stimulates the formation of new bone tissue.
  • Recovery: The Ilizarov method allows for the avoidance of serious complications, as the lengthening process occurs slowly and in a controlled manner. This ensures better bone fusion and allows patients to restore limb function.

The method is used not only for lengthening but also for correcting deformities, treating complex injuries, and performing reconstructive surgeries after infections or tumors. The operation is performed under anesthesia, and after the procedure, patients are advised to undergo rehabilitation to restore limb function.

Frequently Asked Questions

The entire process, including distraction and fixation, can take several months to a year, depending on the individual characteristics of the patient and the volume of lengthening.

As with any surgical operation, there are risks, including infection, delayed bone healing, and soft tissue problems. However, experienced specialists at HEG take measures to minimize these risks.

The incisions are minimal, and with proper care, scars become less noticeable over time.

We have achieved limb lengthening of up to 16 cm for cosmetic reasons. In cases of obvious disproportion, lengthening up to 32 cm is possible for patients with achondroplasia. The record lengthening at the Ilizarov Center was 58 cm. It is important to assess what lengthening is necessary to achieve proportionality. We do not recommend lengthening only the shinbones by 7 cm without subsequent lengthening of the thigh bone to maintain
